Milky Way potentials in CDM and MOND. Is the Large Magellanic Cloud on a bound orbit?

چکیده
We compute the Milky Way potential in different cold dark matter (CDM) based models, and compare these with the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) framework. We calculate the axis ratio of the potential in various models, and find that isopotentials are less spherical in MOND than in CDM potentials. As an application of these models, we predict the escape velocity as a function of the position in the Galaxy. This could be useful in comparing with future data from planned or alreadyunderway kinematic surveys (RAVE, SDSS, SEGUE, SIM, GAIA or the hypervelocity stars survey). In addition, the predicted escape velocity is compared with the recently measured high proper motion velocity of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). To bind the LMC to the Galaxy in a MOND model, while still being compatible with the RAVE-measured local escape speed at the Sun’s position, we show that an external field modulus of less than 0.03a0 is needed.

Galactic orbital motions in the Dark Matter, MOdified Newtonian Dynamics and MOdified Gravity scenarios
We simultaneously integrate in a numerical way the equations of motion of both the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) in the MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND), MOdified Gravity (MOG) and Cold Dark Matter (CDM) frameworks for −1 ≤ t ≤ 1 Gyr in order to see if, at least in principle, it is possible to discriminate between them. Since the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) are...
متن کاملHow Lumpy is the Milky Way’s Dark Matter Halo?
CDM simulations predict that there are hundreds of lumps of with masses greater than 10M⊙ in the Milky Way halo. However, we know of only a dozen dwarf satellites close to this mass. Are these lumps simply lacking in stars or is there a fundamental flaw in our most popular cosmology? By studying the tidal debris of known satellites we can potentially address this question. In this paper, we qua...
متن کاملA Magellanic origin for the warp of the Galaxy
We show that a Magellanic Cloud origin for the warp of the Milky Way can explain most quantitative features of the outer HI layer recently identified by Levine, Blitz & Heiles (2005). We construct a model similar to that of Weinberg (1998) that produces distortions in the dark matter halo, and we calculate the combined effect of these dark-halo distortions and the direct tidal forcing by the Ma...
متن کاملLittle Dwarf Galaxies Survive within Bigger Dwarfs: Why Some Dwarfs Go Dark and Others Stay Luminous
The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) was the largest galaxy in a group of galaxies that entered the Milky Way (MW) system at late times. Seven of the 11 brightest dwarf galaxies of the MW may have been part of this system. The association of dwarfs with the plane of the LMCs orbit has been used to argue that they are formed from tidal debris from LMC and SMC (Kroupa et al. 2005). Instead, we find t...
متن کاملCoupling between satellite dwarfs and the Milky Way warp
The perturbations of satellite galaxies, in particular the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), have been repeatedly proposed and discounted as the cause of the Milky Way warp. While the LMC may excite a wake in the Galactic dark matter halo that could provide sufficient torque to excite a warp of the observed magnitude, its orbit may be incompatible with the orientation of the warp’s line of nodes. T...
